UK Cabinet Minister for Transformational Government, Tom Watson MP, was recently reported as encouraging young people to play video games to help them learn.

In a story in The Mirror newspaper, Tom was reported as saying:

Quote
"I'd rather my boy be playing on his Wii than passively watching telly.

"Most games are educational. They make you think, focus, challenge and change - 500 years ago a medium that did this would be called art."

In another story in Computer Weekly, Tom suggests that computer games can play a substantial role in getting the UK through the economic downturn:

Quote
He said not only could serious games help in the imminent recession, but could "help pave the way for what comes after".

"The government's constant aim is to improve delivery of public services, but the economic downturn means that right now, we have pretty much no margin for error," he Watson added.

"Delivering more for less has never been so important, at least not in my lifetime, and serious games can play a substantial role in helping do that at a time when public services will be more and more in demand."

Tom Watson will be presenting the opening address at this years Game Based Learning which is being held in London, March 19th - 20th, at The Brewery.
